Sustainable Resource Management

Natural Approach

Our mission is to bring a natural solution to an age old problem - weeds and invasive plant species.  We believe that our goats provide a much needed tool in the resource management tool belt.  For too many years the go to solution has been chemical use, while we do not discredit this method we do know that there is a better way.

For millennia herders and their flocks have managed the pasture lands all over the world. Our belief is that it is time to reintroduce this age old philosophy that mimics what we find in nature.  When you hike through the wilderness you don't simply see one species of animal. There are many and each targets different plants, thus keeping a balance. However, as man made disturbances happen that balance gets thrown out and it takes a concerted effort to come in and try to mimic what nature would typically do and that is what targeted grazing does.

Our goats are keen employees who don't need a manual or extensive training to zero in on things such as nap weed, thistle, over grown brush, cheat grass, russian olive and the list goes on.  As they go about their business their hooves aerate the soil and plant seeds - just like a large herd of elk or deer.

Unlike mechanical treatments goats don't leave a large footprint on the land and they don't leave behind a residual like chemical treatments.

We contract our goats out each year to carry this philosophy forward.  In the process we are deeply rewarded to meet and work with like minded stewards of the land.  Any inquiries into our work or just a chat about our philosophy are welcomed.

  • Goats have enzymes in their stomachs that reduce the viability of seeds passing through their system
  • Goats have larger livers than other ungulates which allows them to consume plants that might otherwise be toxic
  • Goats are browsers and prefer to consume leaves and woody species  leaving the grasses
  • Goats have specially shaped mouths that allow them to score seeds such as Russian Olive, so that as they pass through their stomachs they are rendered un viable
